Slater Schools presents new district flag

During a regular Slater School Board meeting held Tuesday, Jan. 19, Superintendent Terry Lorenz recognized this month’s Partners in Education. The two partners were Slater Designs and FFA Alumni.

“The first one is Slater Designs Rick Hays, who graciously took some time away from work to come up and be with us,” Lorenz said. “Everybody knows Rick, everybody knows Slater Designs. They’ve been fantastic in helping us, whether it’s jackets, shirts, logos, any kind of apparel.”

Lorenz added that recently Hays even helped the school district prepare to present the new school flag — which would be discussed later in the meeting. Lorenz reported Hays is also working with him on creating video surveillance signage, too.

“He’s a good business partner, he’s a good friend,” Lorenz commented. “I’ve known him for a long time, and I just can’t thank him and his business enough.”

Zach Crews, who represented the FFA Alumni, accepted the plaque for Partners in Education.

“There’s not been a time in the four years I was here before — and even most recently now — when we need something they just say ask — and we ask and they make it happen,” Lorenz said. “It’s a great group.”

Lorenz noted his appreciation for the FFA Alumni’s involvement in the memorial bench dedicated to Steve Sullivan. Lorenz asked Crews to pass along his appreciation for the organization.

For district guests, the board had Kenna Lemmon in attendance, who created the new school flag design. Lorenz had briefly referenced the flag earlier in the meeting.

Slater High School Business Instructor Rita Shaw talked about how Lorenz inquired about her picking one of her classes to help create a new flag.

“I picked Web Design, and so I just gave them a blank slate and … Kenna’s was the most unique and most different — and it was voted on by you all (the board) and her fellow peers — and it’s a really great flag,” Shaw said.

Lorenz praised Lemmon for her work and thanked her for this new design. He also thanked Shaw for setting up this assignment.

Lorenz noted if anyone is interested in having this as a decoration — the district would be more than happy to get community members in touch with Slater Designs.
