Asus ProArt Studiobook 16 3D OLED with Simulated Reality 3D eye-tracking display and stylus-enabled haptic touchpad left us pretty impressed
Asus’s ProArt lineup has been one of the most sought-after Pro workstation laptops in the creative world. Now, at CES 2023, Asus is taking things to the next level with the introduction of a revamped ProArt StudioBook 16 OLED now with a Simulated Reality (SR) 3D display.
The new ProArt StudioBook 16 3D OLED (H7604)’s 120 Hz 3.2K OLED screen uses Dimenco’s Simulated Reality 3D technology that enables viewing of 3D content in Extended Reality (XR) without the need for glasses or head-mounted displays. Previously, we’ve seen this technology implemented in the Acer ConceptD 7 SpatialLabs and Acer Predator Helios 300 SpatialLabs laptops as well.
Asus offers new Spatial Vision technology that converts 2D content into immersive 3D. In our hands-on with the laptop, Asus explained that they are working exclusively with Dimenco for the SR 3D display tech. Each pixel on the OLED has individual lenses and there’s an additional camera for eye-tracking. We noticed that it takes a split second for the eye-tracking to register, but it follows well thereafter as long as the movement is not too rapid.
We were shown a 3D demo with models of a dinosaur and a bee along with a 3D trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water. The effect did seem pretty convincing to us with the limited time we had with the device. Now, one might ask what the use of this tech is when one can simply hook up a VR headset and get a more immersive experience. Honestly, it’s too early to tell but we feel that it is good that companies are exploring ways of offering immersive experiences natively without the need for extra accessories.
Internally, the ProArt StudioBook 16 3D OLED gets the latest Intel Core i9-13980HX processor, Nvidia RTX 40 series graphics with Studio drivers, up to 64 GB of DDR5-4800 RAM, and up to 8 TB of PCIe Gen 4 storage. Asus offers two upgradable SO-DIMM slots and two M.2 slots for easy upgradability. Asus said that a “Pro” variant of the ProArt StudioBook 16 3D OLED with professional graphics from Nvidia will launch sometime later this year.
Another first for the ProArt StudioBook 16 3D OLED is the implementation of a 16:10 haptic touchpad with stylus support. We also get the Asus Dial for quick access to common functions in popular creative tools. Other features include a wide range of ports including two Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.1-out, FHD IR camera with 1.4-micron pixel size, SD Express 7.0 card reader, and a 90 WHr battery.
The ProArt StudioBook 16 OLED will also be available in a non-3D version. Pricing and availability information for the 2023 ProArt StuioBook 16s are yet to be released.
