Saw 3D: The Final Chapter Blu-ray Review
Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman, December 24, 2022
Note: This version of this film is available on Blu-ray as part of Via Vision Entertainment’s Saw: The Ultimate Collection 4K.
Nothing screams the holiday season like the Saw franchise, am I right? (At least if the emphasis is on screaming.) Via Vision
offering fans of the series some rather luxe packaging, but a release that is a bit odd in that it combines 4K UHD and 1080 offerings of the Saw
films. The release more or less duplicates the releases that fans on this side of several ponds have seen, and so relevant portions of
reviews I’ve personally written may be reprinted here, and some reviews of the Via Vision releases may contain further links to Region A reviews I
didn’t have a hand in.
As with several of the earlier Lionsgate 1080 Region A releases of the various Saw films, this one got a thorough write up by Martin Liebman
in his Saw: The Final Chapter 3D Blu-ray
review. I highly recommend those wanting a plot recap of the film to read Marty’s writing, though I once again caution that “different reviewers
means different opinions”, and my scores vary somewhat from Marty’s.
Saw 3D: The Final Chapter Blu-ray, Video Quality
Saw 3D is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Via Vision Entertainment with MVC (3D) and AVC (2D) encoded 1080p transfers in 1.78:1. Marty
was incredibly enthusiastic about both presentations on the Lionsgate release, but I’m a bit less consistently pleased with the presentations here for a
couple of reasons. The lurid palette that many of the Saw franchises offer, along with both lighting and grading choices, as well as some post
production tweaks, give the 2D presentation in particular a posterized quality at times which came awfully close to macroblocking on a couple of
occasions, and there are some low light moments that can look a bit on the noisy side. The 3D presentation is outstanding for both “in your face” and
in frame depth presentations. Marty provides a great deal of detail in his Saw: The Final Chapter 3D Blu-ray review.
Saw 3D: The Final Chapter Blu-ray, Audio Quality
Saw VI offers an often bombastic DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 that is the equal of its immediate predecessors in the series. Surround activity is
established from the get go, and both a whirlwind of effects and some aggressive scoring keep the side and rear channels regularly engaged. Dialogue
is rendered cleanly and clearly throughout. Optional English and Spanish subtitles are available.
Saw 3D: The Final Chapter Blu-ray, Overall Score and Recommendation
The 3D effects are arguably the most interesting thing about this various outing in the Saw franchise, and the good news is the 3D effects are
almost alarmingly well done. Overall technical merits are generally solid and the supplements are enjoyable, for anyone who may be considering
making a purchase.
